What causes most stress in life? Relationships? Employment? No. Money. Or so a recent survey in the UK has suggested. Britain is reeling amongst the tidal wave of a stress epidemic. Stress is becoming a buzzword – almost a fashion accessory. Half of 2000 people surveyed said they were more stressed than 5 years ago and 20% report being under strain every day. The things that suffer because of increasing stress include sleeping patterns and sex lives. And money seems to be the number one cause of stress having overtaken employment worries into number one spot. You would think that terrorist alerts or global warming might be a major cause of individual and collective stress, but they don’t feature. It’s money. Global warming and terrorism may kill you. But money gets the nod when it comes to stress. Women are more likely to suffer from stress (although men are less likely, perhaps, to report it). 55% of women suffer stress more than once per month (compared to 40% for men). There are other breakdowns – into age and geographical location for example – but the underlying message is that we are increasingly feeling stressed. And alcohol appears to be the number one method for drowning our sorrows and relieving our discomfort. No trips to the doctors (although the doctors may say differently) and no support from friends and family. But a lot of us, it appears, do nothing about stress. We tend to ignore it, hoping that it will go away. So not only are we becoming more stressed but we are less likely to deal with it properly.
